“GEOLOGY OF TONDO REGION, DISTRICT OF EAST PALU, CITY OF PALU, PROVINCE OF CENTRAL SULAWESI”Administratively, the research area is located in the District of East Palu, City of Palu, Province of Central Sulawesi or lies between 119°52’00” – 119°58’00” East Longitude and 00°48’00” – 00°52’00” South Latitude.
The research aims to do a surface-geological mapping using a 1 : 25.000 topography map. The objective of this geological mapping is to make a geological map that shows geological condition of the research area which is about geomorphology, stratigraphy, geological structures, historical geology and mine resources. Methodology used are a field orientation and surface geological mapping using a map scale 1 : 25.000.
Geomorphologycaly, the research area is devided into four geomorphic units : Marine Plain Unit, Fluvial Plain Unit, Denudational Hill Unit and Denudational Mountainous Unit. Drainage pattern is dendritic, genetic types are insequent and consequent. The research area stratigraphically consists of four units from the youngest namely alluvial deposites, conglomerate, quartz diorite intrusive and gneiss. Geological structures occurred in the research area are fold, joint and fault ; are devided into two kinds : Watutela Strike-slip Fault and Layana Strike-slip Fault. Geological history of the research area was begun from Mesozoikum when metamorphic rock namely gneiss was formed. At Lower Eocene, quartz diorite intrusive occurred, followed by the forming of conglomerate at Pleistocene. Alluvial deposites then covered all the units in which the process is still working until now and form a morphological feature as seen in present. Mine resources found in the research area are conglomerate, quartz diorite and stream deposites. By Rosmarini Tole - 2001
